- Google has met a $5M lawsuit from Maria Vaca
- The cause was a malicious crypto wallet in Google Play
Google has faced a $5 million lawsuit from Maria Vaca for a malicious crypto wallet in Google Play that led her to lose her savings.
Details of the $5M Crypto Lawsuit
The lawsuit filed in California state court by Maria Vaca insists that the security of apps hosted on Google Play should be Google’s direct responsibility.
Also, it insists that she cannot be responsible for losing funds by downloading a malicious crypto wallet app from there.
However, crypto lawyer Andrew Dressel believes that the case’s outcome will mainly depend on how much Google was aware of the fraudulent purpose of the app leaving it in its app store.
Continuous Security Issues on Google Play
It’s worth noting that cases of fraudulent crypto apps are not new to Google Play and last year Google itself filed several lawsuits against such apps that were allegedly responsible for losses for over 100,000 users.
This once again opens up the question of how thorough the security mechanisms in Google Play are, from how such apps get there to why many of them stay there for a long time.
Conclusions
Fraudulent apps are an ongoing problem, but in the context of the increasing popularity of crypto, this takes the threats to a new level.
Most people aren’t that educated in crypto, so apps make much bigger numbers for attackers, and we’re seeing them on the rise.
Hopefully, key platforms will be more careful about what they allow to be published and take their responsibility, as well as user trust, more seriously.
