  • Brazil’s Supreme Court orders Elon Musk to complete the Brazil X representative appointment within 24 hours
  • Non-compliance could result in the suspension of the X platform in Brazil
  • This marks another escalation in Musk’s legal disputes with Brazilian authorities

Elon Musk has received an ultimatum from the Brazilian Supreme Court: appoint a legal representative for his platform X in Brazil within 24 hours, or risk having the service suspended in the country. This is just the latest chapter in the increasingly tense relationship between Musk and Brazilian authorities.

What Happened

The court’s decision was made public on Wednesday evening. Earlier this month, X announced it would cease operations and lay off staff in Brazil, citing “censorship orders” from Moraes.

However, the company assured that its services would remain available to users in the country, as reported by Reuters on Thursday.

The Supreme Court posted a screenshot of the court decision on its X account, tagging both Musk’s account and X’s Global Government Affairs account. The document highlights that companies failing to comply with the country’s laws or protect private information might face a temporary suspension of their activities.

Why It Matters

This development is the latest in a series of clashes between Musk and Brazilian authorities. In April, Musk was investigated by the Brazilian Supreme Court for obstructing justice in a social media dispute.

Musk’s platform X has also challenged a Brazilian court order and called for Judge Moraes to resign, accusing him of issuing “the most draconian demands of any country on Earth.”

The ongoing legal battles between Musk and the governments of Brazil and Australia over content restrictions have been widely reported. Critics argue that Musk’s selective challenges to these restrictions empower extremists, while Musk claims they suppress free speech.

His feud with Brazilian authorities began with the management of “digital militias” linked to former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Conclusion

Musk is once again at the center of a legal challenge, this time in Brazil. With the risk of X being suspended, the next steps could change the game for social media in the country. We’ll have to see how the situation develops.
