- Ripple Labs donates $50,000 to LAFD Foundation amidst ongoing wildfires
- Fires started on January 7th, affecting Pacific Palisades, Altadena, Pasadena, and Calabasas
- Over 150,000 people evacuated, with at least 10 casualties
Ripple Labs has donated a significant amount to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, amidst the ongoing wildfires devastating the city. In partnership with Moonpay, the crypto firm donated $50,000 to the city’s fire department.
The LAFD publicly thanked Ripple for its contribution at this time of need. On Twitter, the department expressed gratitude “for giving back to our LAFD heroes”. The donation was made to RLUSD, the newly launched dollar-pegged stablecoin by Ripple Labs.
The Los Angeles fires started on January 7th, with the most affected regions being the Pacific Palisades, Altadena, Pasadena, and Calabasas areas. At this time, the local fire department is battling at least 3 different major blazes in L.A.
The severity of the fires was made worse due to the extreme winds and extreme drought that are typical at this time of the year. So far, over 150,000 people have been relocated from their homes, and at least 10 casualties were confirmed.
For the last three days, the LAFD has been working non-stop to try to tame the situation. While no specific reason for why the fires grew as much as they did has been reported, the Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Cowley recently highlighted how recent budget cuts caused the department to become understaffed and underprepared to prevent a situation such as this.
After destroying over 10,000 L.A. homes, local firefighters are beginning to be able to contain the wildfires. According to recent reports, the Palisades Fire is about 8% contained, while the Eaton Fire is at 3% containment.
