US Department of Defense Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) announced the Crowdsourced AI Red-Teaming (CAIRT) Assurance Program to identify vulnerabilities in AI products offered by companies for use in chatbots in military medical services.

This data will help be used in future deployments, a relevance that is growing amid China’s efforts to develop its own AI systems.

More About AI for Military Purposes

So, the use of AI in the military sector, which was probably foreshadowed by many, is now becoming more and more evident. In this case, we are talking about intentions to use LLMs for chatbots in military medical services, more specifically for clinical note summarization and as medical advisers in the military.

Also, the use of AI is becoming an increasingly hot topic even in a broader context, and some policymakers are even drawing this as an analogy to the Manhattan Project, as outlined in a November 2024 letter to Congress.

While proactive action may make sense, the January 2 announcement from the US Department of Defense Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) regarding the Crowdsourced AI Red-Teaming (CAIRT) Assurance Program makes it clear that there is still a lot of work to be done before AI systems can be safely deployed in critical operations.

More specifically, this program was designed to evaluate the increasing number of AI companies and their products offered to the DoD. The program was primarily implemented by technology nonprofit company Humane Intelligence but also involved more than 200 independent external participants, including clinical providers and healthcare analysts.

According to the DoD report:

“The exercise uncovered over 800 findings of potential vulnerabilities and biases related to employing these capabilities in these prospective use cases.”

And yet, this means that the application of AI in this sector is being discarded, but quite the opposite. Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office’s lead for the initiative, Matthew Johnson believes the findings are extremely valuable for safer and more efficient deployment of AI systems in the future.

“This exercise will result in repeatable and scalable output via the development of benchmark data sets, which can be used to evaluate future vendors and tools for alignment with performance expectations.”

Conclusion

It’s very much like the still early days, but an arms race that many have been predicting. Are expectations about LLM systems and their effectiveness overstated, and we still won’t see them being allowed into critical sectors?

Or will their effectiveness not be far behind, which is why their careful but proactive implementation may already have many worried?
