El Salvador President Nayib Bukele just donated $133,000 worth of Bitcoin in a fundraising event looking to build a thousand schools in Honduras.
The donation of 2 BTC was sent to Shin Fujiyama – a Japanese philanthropist responsible for “Students Helping Honduras”, a non-profit organization focused on raising money to build schools in Honduras.
To gather funds for the project, Fujiyama live streams his marathon running and shares his journey with supporters. The precise moment of Bukele’s donation was captured live on TikTok after the Japanese philanthropist had run over 3,000 kilometers to raise funds for the project.
Following the donation, Fujiyama thanked El Salvador’s president, stating that he himself was an inspiration to kickstart Students Helping Honduras.
President Bukele and His Pro-Bitcoin Government
El Salvador is widely regarded as one of the most pro-crypto nations in the world. The country was the first to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, and since 2021, it has adopted a heavy dollar-cost averaging (DCA) strategy, purchasing one Bitcoin every day.
The Central American nation was also the first to create a physical bank exclusively responsible for storing digital assets. Also, Bukele implemented a national BTC wallet “Chivo”, and incentivized El Salvadorians to adopt the currency with a $30.00 BTC stimulus.
